PIER 58 RENOVATION ADDS NEW PARK AND
PLAY SPACES TO WATERFRONT PARK
With the July 25 Grand Opening of renovated Pier 58, Seattle’s waterfront has been transformed into a beautiful park and play space. The location, tied into Pike Place Market, stretching from the Seattle Aquarium and The Seattle Great Wheel, in one of Seattle’s most-loved historic locations – where the Emerald City meets Elliott Bay.
With easy access and sweeping views of the bay and the Olympic Mountains, the new 50,000 square-foot combination-space was designed for the enjoyment of all community members, including families with children. Features include wide walking paths, a large grassy area, a tree grove with permanent tables and chairs, other shaded seating for just relaxing, people-watching or taking in the views, as well as a spectacular children’s playground.
The Playground
The main attraction for families with children will likely be the exciting marine-inspired playground, It features an 18-foot jellyfish climbing structure and slide with rolling tentacles, crab wobble boards, magnetic bead board, and other climbing and swinging equipment, with a nearby shaded area. Seating is available throughout the park area so parents and caregivers can relax and watch their children play safely.
Elements like tall, kelp-like poles help establish the playground’s marine-themed design, and invite curiosity about Seattle’s local marine life. Designed by:

A Performance Plaza
An open plaza in the middle of the park is available for concerts and other cultural programming, which will change regularly – so there will always be a new reason to revisit the park to enjoy concerts and other community events.
Fitzgerald Fountain
When a large part of the old park collapsed into the water in September of 2020, the original bronze Fitzgerald Fountain sank to the bottom along with it. But divers brought it back. The re-furbished bronze fountain is now part of the new Pier 58, installed on the south side of the pier.
Other Benefits of the Pier 58 Renovation
Part of the intention for the Pier 58 redesign, was to improve the local marine habitat. Openings in the new pier’s structure provides more natural light to reach the water, allowing more aquatic plants to grow and provide food for fish.
Seattle historian, Feliks Banel, said he believes the forward-looking redesign of Pier 58 creates a waterfront spot that can stand alongside the Space Needle as a timeless memory maker. “It’s about looking ahead, and bringing forward the values that we treasure now. That’s what’s happening to the waterfront.”
Other Waterfront Improvements:
- Seattle Promenade all along the Elliott Bay, with wide walking spaces.
- Rebuilt Pier 62 and the Seawall
- Newly surfaced street along “Dzidzilalich”, Alaskan Way.
- A connection between the Overlook Walk, Salish Steps and thePike Place Market.
- New permanent art installations.
- New public restrooms.
In addition, a full 1.2 miles bike path is now open, offering another mode for locals and visitors to explore and enjoy the park. Riders can experience views from South King Street all the way to the Elliot Bay Trail.
